Tired of getting gifts that not only aren’t what you’re looking for, but might even cause you to be unhappy? Read about PopConversation's interview with Christian and Gregory, the managing director and product director at uniQgift respectively.

(text and image by PopConversation)

Herman: Hi sir, my name is herman, I'm a writer at PopCoversation and i feel dead and empty inside. I consulted Dr Mass Media and Marketing and they prescribed branded leather goods and excessive clubbing but their solutions only work for a short while, usually up until a new bag comes out or I sober up.

Why am I not as happy as people in the commercials and am I turning into a zombie?

No pigeons harmed in this shootout

Dec 9, 2011 11:55:10 AM

By Mustafa Hatwadi

Canadian bulls and figure 14 targets are pretty familiar to us boys who have served in green for two years. What we never got a chance to try shooting during National Service however, are moving, flying targets. This is where WOW Experience comes in with Laser Clay Shooting. Laser clay shooting is played with authentic, but de-activated 12-bore shotguns that fire infrared beams at reflective and reusable clays.

Survey on highest number
of re-gifted items

Regardless of occasion, gifting has become an integral part of celebrations in Singapore. A recent survey we conducted on over 300 Singaporeans found that one in four of the respondents bought presents all the time just to bring cheer to friends and family. The survey sussed out our gift giving and receiving culture, including top gift choices, gift spending habits, and the tendency to re-gift particular types of gifts. Now that we've summed up in the headline what people don't want to receive, we'll share what exactly will present a smile to you.

Gift vouchers remain high on the list of preferred gift options among Singaporeans at 56.7 percent, allowing the recipient to exercise the option of choosing what they want. Gift cards are the usual choice but the popularity of gift-experience boxes is steadily rising. However, the lack of a personal touch and a danger that the vouchers would expire before they were used are causes for concern.

Interestingly, we discovered that the top three gifts our respondents have received were gifts such as dining opportunities, spa treatments, vacations and vouchers. These gifts spoke to the recipients' personal tastes and preferences.

Interested in what else we found? Read the full survey findings here (PDF).

Tucked beside conservation shophouses in Tanjong Pagar, Taratata Bistrot invites you to experience the romance of a Parisian bistro in the heart of the business district. Serving French classics, we speak to Marketing Manager, Eliza Foo, on how Taratata plays to the rhythm of your palate.

1) Where did you get the name Taratata?

The 2 French chefs/owners, Bertrand Raguin and Philippe Nouzillat, were looking for a catchy, young, different name that wouldn't restrict their cuisine or force them to serve stereotypical dishes from France (although they do retain some French classics).

They came up with the name "Taratata" which, in itself, has no real meaning but is rather an interjection or expression the French use. "Taratata" finds its origins in 1939 from the movie Gone With The Wind when Scarlette O'Hara utters "taratata". This word later became synonymous with a French musical television programme.

Because the word originated from France, the owners knew that the name would resonate with the French, and at the same time, be a conversation piece with the locals and other nationalities in Singapore. This in itself has proven to be self promoting, because people often ask, "what is Taratata?" or "what does it mean?". And as more people talk, the word or name gets around.

2) Apart from the French classics, what unique dishes do you serve at Taratata?

There are weekly specials such as Chef Bertrand's delightfully appetizing Pilchards & Cottage Cheese Parfait, and Oven-Baked Chinese Cabbage Stuffed with Foie-Gras and Black Truffle, which has a deliberate oriental twist. The combination is quite delectable! These items may not be on the menu all year long, as they make way for other original culinary creations.

3) What gets diners returning to your bistro and how would newcomers enjoy the experience?

The great service (so we've heard)! Many of our fans tell us it's the quality and freshness of our products. They also like how each dish is perfectly cooked and seasoned, then served in good portion size that's affordable.

Taratata Bistrot is featured in the Culinary Treats gift experience box. It is located at 35A Keong Saik Road and opens from 11:30am from Mondays to Thursdays and from 5pm on Saturdays.

Get Hands-On with Art Jam

Nov 3, 2011 5:41:32 PM

Da Vinci had his Mona Lisa, Michelangelo had the Sistine Chapel, and Van Gogh had Irises. Discover your inner artist at Art Jam at Arteastiq Tea Lounge, where you can go on a social painting adventure. Mr Ivan Teo, its director, shares why it doesn't matter whether you're a novice or an accomplished painter to relish Art Jam.

1) What would you say to an art novice who has been standing in front of a blank canvas with no idea where to begin?

We usually ask our customers to give some thought to what they want to paint before coming for their session. If they come unprepared, our reference corner has many ideas for them to browse through. We also have a computer for customers to print images to refer to for their painting.

2) What would you recommend experienced "Art Jammers" do to draw more inspiration?

Browsing though other artists' work for inspiration would be a good place to start with. If youre still at a loss, more alcohol would definitely help!

Know someone who'd enjoy an Art Jam session? Find it in the Hands-On gift experience box. Arteastiq is located at Mandarin Gallery, #04-14/15 and is open daily from 11am to 10:30pm.
